A small, honest way to get liquid

PrivateTechShares is an independent education and tools service for people who hold private-company equity — shares, options or RSUs in startups that haven’t exited yet — in Europe and the US.

Why this exists

PrivateTechShares started from a simple frustration. People who help build early-stage companies often end up with something valuable on paper — shares, options, or a small stake they’ve worked hard to earn. But when life happens and they want access to a little cash, there’s rarely an easy path.

The larger secondary platforms usually aren’t interested in a €30k, €50k, or even €100k transaction. And trying to sell privately can feel uncomfortable — you’re not sure who to speak to, how much your shares are worth, or how to have those conversations without drawing attention.

That frustration is personal. Having spent years building companies toward their next financing round, we kept wondering the same things many founders and employees do: what is this equity actually worth, and what would it take to turn a slice of it into cash — sensibly, and without getting in over your head? PrivateTechShares is the answer we wished existed: a plain-English place to understand what you hold, what it might be worth, the rules that apply, and how a private sale actually works — before you decide to do anything.

What we are — and what we’re not

We are an education, tools and intelligence service. We publish plain-English guides, free calculators, and company-by-company explainers so that holders can get prepared and make their own informed decisions.

We are not a broker or a marketplace. PrivateTechShares does not introduce buyers and sellers, does not hold funds, does not list shares, and does not execute or advise on transactions. Whether to buy or sell, and on what terms, is entirely the individual decision and responsibility of the people involved, based on their own due diligence and their own professional advisers. What we do is help you prepare — a clear picture of what you hold, what it may be worth, and the paperwork — so that if and when you decide to act, you’re ready.

How we keep it independent

Our guides are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any of the companies we write about. Company names and logos belong to their owners and are used only to describe the market for their shares. Where we point to outside sources, they’re neutral references for your own research. Everything on the site is general information, not financial, tax or legal advice.

Who’s behind it

PrivateTechShares is run by a group of founders and operators with first-hand experience of building private companies and navigating startup equity — the paper wealth, the exercise decisions, and the search for a little liquidity when the big platforms weren’t interested. Built by a startup operator and company co-founder — 15+ years across a Fortune 500 operations role and a venture-backed company, through EU regulatory approvals and a Series A raise. Here are our Terms and Privacy policy.
