Markup

Also called: valuation markup, paper markup

In one line

An increase in a company's valuation between rounds, raising the on-paper value of existing shares.

In plain English

When a new round prices the company higher, earlier shares are 'marked up' in value on paper. It's good news, but it's unrealised until you can actually sell.

If you were explaining it to a 5-year-old

The club says your toy is now worth more than last year — but it's just a new price tag until someone actually buys it.

Why it matters when you sell

A markup raises your paper wealth and your reference price, but only a sale turns it into real money.
