Net asset value (NAV)

Also called: NAV

In one line

The per-unit value of a fund or SPV's holdings, used to price stakes in vehicles that hold private shares.

In plain English

For funds and SPVs that own private shares, NAV is the value of what they hold divided by the units outstanding. Secondary buyers of fund stakes often transact at a discount or premium to NAV.

If you were explaining it to a 5-year-old

If a shared piggy bank holds toys worth 100 coins and has 100 slips, each slip's 'NAV' is 1 coin.

Why it matters when you sell

If you hold or buy via an SPV or fund, NAV (and the discount to it) determines the real value of your stake.
